I am an Immigrant:
The Ballad of Human Movement

Exhibitions

A key theme of this work is intimacy. As such, we have created exhibition environments that are contemplative and allow the visitor to listen closely to each story. Our exhibitions offer tea and a table to sit at. The portraits of the people who were interviewed are displayed at the tables, while black and white photographs of the Utica landscapes that came up in the conversations hang on the background walls.

Our interviews foster intimacy through our methods of in person close conversation, and the use of analog photography. We hope that presenting the interviews in this environment fosters intimacy between the visitors and the interviewees, and between visitors themselves.

Previous Exhibitions

In the fall of 2025, we presented our collected stories at the Gannett Gallery using immersive directional speakers, which allow visitors to only hear sound within a limited radius, so that guests can walk in and out of the hearing range of different stories throughout the gallery. Each story station featured a chair and a coffee table with the narrator’s portrait, inviting visitors to sit, stay, and listen.
